WESTFIELD, NJ— January 23 is National Pie Day, in case you need an excuse to enjoy one of America’s favorite foods. There are plenty of ways to celebrate, from digging into a slice of lemon meringue at the local diner to whipping up a sweet treat at home.
For a fun and delicious pie-making experience of your own, try the following Vindaloo Spiced Pecan Pie recipe from Savory Spice Shop, where you can find Vindaloo spice blend, maple sugar and much more. The spice mix—made with cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, fenugreek, cayenne and cloves—gives the filling a hint of heat to complement the maple-sugar sweetness.
The Downtown Westfield Corporation and the entire downtown community extend their thoughts and well wishes to the property owners and businesses affected by Sunday's devastating fire as they determine their next steps.

The family-owned record store, lost to a six-alarm fire Sunday evening, was a second home to many.
Last night, we stood in the Midas parking lot on South Avenue, and watched our memories burn. We stood and watched as Sound Station, and the surrounding businesses, became ashes. What seemed like the last row of family-owned businesses in Westfield, is now gone.
And as we stood with Bob Larsen, owner of Sound Station, we just didnt know what to say. I stared through the shattered front window at the horror movie mask they had propped up on a display behind the counter. It used to have my best friends decorated graduation cap on top of it.

NY REAL ESTATE RESIDENTIAL JANUARY 14, 2012 --
New Arrivals, Longtimers Mix in Westfield
By MELANIE LEFKOWITZ
The town of Westfield, in New Jersey's Union County, blends a sophisticated downtown, lined with high-end stores and art galleries, with a small-town atmosphere, thanks to its close-knit community and historic homes.
Westfield's mix of cosmopolitan and bucolic draws young families from New York and Hoboken, as well as the grown children of longtime residents. Brokers say they also have seen increasing numbers of work-related relocations, as people moving to work in the New York area for a few years are attracted to Westfield's schools, central location and varied housing stock.
Shop Smart, Do Good: A Fundraising Day is a special event hosted by Lord & Taylor in support of local non-profit organizations. Participating organizations receive tickets to sell before the date of the event. Each ticket is valued at $5 and includes a special 25% coupon to be used on your choice of one item from ladies' sportswear, dresses, suits and another 25% to use on almost anything for men, an additional 20% coupon to be used on one regular or sale priced item, and a 15% savings pass to be used throughout the day on almost everything including cosmetics and fragrances. Organizations keep 100% of proceeds from ticket sales, while customers receive exclusive savings and a fun-filled day of shopping and events. In 2011, participating organizations raised over $585,000!
The Westfield store Spring 2012 event will be held May 1. If you are affiliated with a non-profit organization or know someone who is, we invite you to participate or share this information. Contact us at dogood@lordandtaylor.com with any questions.

WESTFIELD, N.J December 6, 2011. A poignant collection of captivating images of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York City is captured in a picture book titled September Mourning by author Dave Rossi.
New Jersey-based, award-winning photographer Dave Rossi’s 10th anniversary World Trade Center memorial picture book consists of dozens of never before published photographs of the World Trade Center. Most of these photos, were taken from the vantage point of New Jersey, and are combined with thoughts, memories, and details of the iconic buildings.
Rossi's book begins with scenic images of the distant towers from West Orange, N.J., when he was an aspiring photographer in the 1970s. The pictorial continues with several award winning images the author took over the years as a professional photographer, including the last photograph he took of the still-standing World Trade Center in September 2001, from Hoboken, N.J. The book centers on a surreal photograph of the downed buildings engulfed in smoke on September 11, 2001, which was shot from just across the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ, and includes a timeline of the events of the morning of the tragedy.
The book progresses through multiple photographs of the "Tribute in Light" memorial light displays, the new One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) under construction and a cross section of memorials in New Jersey. The memorials include a city park in Westfield, county memorials in West Orange (Essex), Springfield/Mountainside (Union) and the New Jersey State September 11 Memorial “Open Sky” just across the river from Ground Zero in Jersey City, New Jersey. Through the memorials in this book a story is told of the bravery, loss, and the remembrance that affects every American.
“September Mourning” will make a valued keepsake and good historical rated “G” reference to pass on to future generations. It pays tribute to those who lost their lives, their families, and to the courageous police, fire, civilians, and rescue workers who worked so hard and even laid down their lives not only doing their duty but also for the love of their fellow man.

The annual “Miracle on Elm Street” holiday promotion took place for the fourth straight year. Sponsored by the Downtown Westfield Corporation as part of the ‘Welcome Home to Westfield’ holiday events, the promotion encouraged people to enter a weekly drawing in downtown stores and restaurants or online and place their entry forms in two special decorated mailboxes located downtown. The weekly drawings of $150, $100, $50 offered weekly gift card prizes to downtown stores and restaurants of the winner’s choice. In addition, there was a bonus drawing for a $20 parking card each week. Winners were drawn at random on December 3, 10, 17, and 24.
There were 1,065 entry forms submitted during the four weeks. While 47% of the entries were from residents of Westfield, applicants originated from as far away as Canada, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland and Washington. This demonstrates that Westfield truly lives up to its name of ‘Welcome Home to Westfield’ during the holiday season.
The first week’s drawing held on December 3rd featured $150 winner Glenn Karaban of Westfield. The $100 winner was Daniel Brotman of Westfield, while the $50 winner was Cathy D’alttillo of Roselle Park. Kristen Lee of Scotch Plains won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.
The second week’s winners on December 10 were James Ng of Westfield ($150 drawing), Leslie Bauer of Princeton ($100 drawing), and Paula Long of Westfield ($50 drawing). Joann Lund of Westfield won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.
The third week’s winners on December 17 were Elvira Rettino of Westfield ($150 drawing), Pamela Reihenberg of Cranford ($100 drawing),and Mary CIrillo of Scotch Plains ($50 drawing). Sandra Hernandez of Union won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.
The last drawing held on December 24 was won by Dale Hagstrom of Westfield ($150 drawing), Kate Warren of Westfield ($100 drawing), and Kimberly Rusinko of Linden ($50 drawing). The bonus drawing for the $20 parking card was won by Maureen Bryce of Ocean, NJ.
The ‘Miracle on Elm Street’ Winners selected gift cards or certificates which were purchased by the DWC at the following downtown businesses: Banana Republic, Running Company, Hershey’s Deli, Aerosole, Game Stop, Learning Express, Adler’s, Rialto Digiplex Destinations, Lord & Taylor, Westfield Service League, AT&T, Chocolate Bar, Chez Catherine, Chico’s, Brick Oven, Eileen Fisher, Cosimo’s, Xocolatz, Trader Joe’s, Rockn Joe Coffeehouse + Bistro, and Limani Seafood Grill.
According to Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation, “We are pleased with the level of participation, not only with the community but also the merchants and restaurants which have embraced this promotion and encouraged their customers to enter the contest. From the time we started this promotion in 2008, we have seen a 281% increase in the number of entries. This year, we also added the name of the business where the applicant entered in order to determine where shoppers and diners went in downtown. The top businesses who encouraged their customers to enter the contest included Eileen Fisher, Sole, Robert Treat Delicatessen, and Ann Taylor.
George Vastardis heads team Limani Seafood Grill in Westfield. Born in the Limani city of Piraeus Greece, the affable gentleman opened the doors to his popular seafood restaurant four short years ago.

And while it is easy to imagine a walk down a vivid path leading to a charming cottage painted Yellow, with Kelly Green shutters and a Purple roof, suspended just below this Ron Hedrick work of art, is the Essence of Vancouver--Light! Note the preponderance of sunlight and shadows as they carry you down a path to perhaps a lake, pond, or secret garden.
As featured artists of the Gallery, Ron Hedrick and his daughter Jessica are known for “The Essence of Light,” their fantastic landscapes, and their fine collection of ballet dancers.
“We discovered the Hedrick family while on a tour of Vancouver,” said Civins. “The father-daughter team concentrate on landscapes as well as figurative works of art.”
Divided into specific areas, pass the “Gardens’ and enter the ‘World of Destinations’. From Spain, to Paris, then Venice, and back to Rome, Italy, you’re quickly whisked up to Ben and Jerry’s Vermont, before heading down to Central Park, where you’re privy to blossoms, exotic automobiles, and a special department specifically designed for the selection of frames in all shapes and sizes. And of course, more paintings. This time by Michele Byrne of Pennsylvania who says, “It is my intention to live the rest of my life as an artist. For, I believe art and life are inseparable.”
New to the Evalyn Dunn Gallery is a selection of giftware. A selection of original pastels are signed, dated, and framed for a mere $28. Then charming, mini bud vases, perfect for lavender or teeny buds, are available in assorted colors of burnt orange, red, purple, and tobacco, ($38).
Along with all of the bibelots displayed on the walls and shelves of this 2300 sq. ft. gallery, do remember it’s the place to visit for custom framing. Rest assured a certified framer will do his best to present your work exactly as you’ve always dreamed it would appear on your wall.
But there is even a greater attraction for those that truly admire fine and precious art. Off to a corner, Jacie Civins proudly displays original works by Renoir, Degas, and Whistler. Thus an even greater reason to visit the The Evalyn Dunn Gallery. Savor the pleasure of positive comments, as you chat about all of the gorgeous artwork you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy.

On Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4th, a joyous crowd gathered for the Grand Celebration of the redesigned and enlarged Evalyn Dunn Gallery on South Avenue in Westfield. Founded by Evalyn and Benjamin Dunn, parents of Proprietor Jaclyn Civins, guests took time to stroll the gallery as they sipped wine and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres.
Boasting the essence of style and design, Jaclyn Civins captured the panache of Worth Ave., in Palm Beach, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, 5th Avenue, Park Avenue, and the exciting Soho in Manhattan. As a curator, The Evalyn Dunn Gallery continues to be a local venue for the exhibition and presentation for the finest 21st Century American and European artists around the world.

This past September marked the one year anniversary of Alan’s Orchard located on Quimby Street in Westfield. And with all that one finds among the shelves, tables, refrigerators, and counters at this busy emporium, many customers simply enter and head for a cup of their refreshing, frozen yogurt, prepared from organic, grass-fed cows.
“It’s amazing how our yogurt really caught on with folks who want the taste of a really delicious yogurt, prepared with real pro biotic values,” said Alan Weinberg, proprietor. “You may enjoy it plain, or with a variety of our fresh-fruit toppings.”
And all the while that folks are shopping for their mini rugalach, pumpkin chocolate chip loaves, fresh breads, organic honey, chocolate or whole, fat-free, or no fat milk in glass bottles, Weinberg swears that his “Honey Crisp and Fuji apples are the best you can buy!”
“You must try the chocolate milk,” said Fanwood resident Allison Speck. “It tastes like melted chocolate ice cream!”
But it’s the ‘Fresh Boxes’ that seem to be the current attraction. Filled with local fruits and vegetables. Weinberg began his program in May of 2011 with twenty-five customers. Today he boasts a list of two hundred, plus a waiting list of over 80 potential clients.
“People love the flexibility of the program,” he said. “They love the idea of picking up a box filled with fresh local produce. They love the convenience of steady, curbside pickup. Customers merely drive-up to the front door, and a member of the staff simply carries their box to their car.”

The renovations for the new Evalyn Dunn Gallery are finally complete. This family-owned and operated business for 5 decades (since 1958) now has a fabulous new gallery that is open for business.
Run by Jaclyn Civins, daughter of original founders Evalyn and Benjamin Dunn, the gallery features a wide variety of artwork, including works by new artists Marjorie Taylor, Jesse Mangerson, and Mary Johnston.
In addition to Degas and Whistler pieces, the Gallery now has a rare collection of Renoir lithographs from the long-lost art trove of Ambroise Vollard. Vollard was the legendary Parisian art dealer who played a pivotal role in the development of the Impressionist and Modern art market.
There is more room for displays, exhibitions and events, and they now carry a beautiful selection of exquisite art glass as well as some very unique photo frames. A big plus is the large onsite parking lot.

Westfield NJ, November 1, 2011 -- The Farmhouse Store in downtown Westfield, NJ has raised their roof - literally. After two years in their current location at 221 E. Broad St. and another three years in Westfield on North Ave. previously, The Farmhouse Store is once again expanding, this time up. They now occupy not just their 3000 sq. ft. ground level store, but an additional 7000 sq. ft. upstairs, connected via an internal staircase and elevator.
With this second expansion, The Farmhouse Store has become the only two-story retail store in Downtown Westfield other than Lord & Taylor. The newly redesigned Farmhouse occupies over 10,000 sq ft and has become the largest independently owned store in the downtown Special Improvement District.
The Farmhouse Store is already more than just a store. It's rather an emporium filled with American handmade crafts for the home, including reclaimed barn wood furniture from Amish and Mennonite craftsmen, upholstered pieces, pillows, pottery, jewelry, lighting, clocks, wall art and gifts. Their style is rustic urban, industrial and country, and they offer thousands of products, displayed in dramatic fashion with oversized pieces, floor to ceiling installations with unique products and inventory that constantly change.
Owners Ed Menapace and Bill Curtis are thrilled about their roof raising. "We are excited to be able to grow our business in downtown Westfield. We love to collaborate with our artisans and craftspeople to bring our customers things they can't find anywhere else. There was so much more we wanted to bring in, and this expansion allowed us to do that," commented Ed.
In the newly expanded space, the Farmhouse store has more room for displaying furniture, rugs, and linens. They have added many more reclaimed barnwood furniture pieces, more American craft, more vintage, as well as bed linens, towels, pillows and lots of other amazing things.
Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation noted, "Farmhouse has been a model for small business and is a tremendous destination for our downtown, even in this economy." Ed's partner Bill Curtis added "Our staff of 18 provide the kind of customer service you can usually find only in small towns. We are all part of the downtown community and treat our customers like family. On top of that, we provide products which cannot be found anywhere else. We are very proud to be part of the downtown Westfield independent retail scene."
The Farmhouse Store opened their new floor on November 1, 2011. Be sure to stop by and see the new space. You will marvel at the expanse of it all and you won't be able to walk out without a gift for yourself or someone else.
