Remembering Sound Station

By Kaitlyn Anness for www.westfield.patch.com

The family-owned record store, lost to a six-alarm fire Sunday evening, was a second home to many.

Last night, we stood in the Midas parking lot on South Avenue, and watched our memories burn. We stood and watched as Sound Station, and the surrounding businesses, became ashes. What seemed like the last row of family-owned businesses in Westfield, is now gone.

And as we stood with Bob Larsen, owner of Sound Station, we just didnt know what to say. I stared through the shattered front window at the horror movie mask they had propped up on a display behind the counter. It used to have my best friends decorated graduation cap on top of it.

NY REAL ESTATE RESIDENTIAL JANUARY 14, 2012 --

New Arrivals, Longtimers Mix in Westfield

By MELANIE LEFKOWITZ

The town of Westfield, in New Jersey's Union County, blends a sophisticated downtown, lined with high-end stores and art galleries, with a small-town atmosphere, thanks to its close-knit community and historic homes.

Westfield's mix of cosmopolitan and bucolic draws young families from New York and Hoboken, as well as the grown children of longtime residents. Brokers say they also have seen increasing numbers of work-related relocations, as people moving to work in the New York area for a few years are attracted to Westfield's schools, central location and varied housing stock.

Downtown Westfield Corporation Announces Winners of 2011 Miracle on Elm Street Drawings
Miracle_on_elm_st

The annual “Miracle on Elm Street” holiday promotion took place for the fourth straight year.  Sponsored by the Downtown Westfield Corporation as part of the ‘Welcome Home to Westfield’ holiday events, the promotion encouraged people to enter a weekly drawing in downtown stores and restaurants or online and place their entry forms in two special decorated mailboxes located downtown.   The weekly drawings of $150, $100, $50 offered weekly gift card prizes to downtown stores and restaurants of the winner’s choice.  In addition, there was a bonus drawing for a $20 parking card each week.  Winners were drawn at random on December 3, 10, 17, and 24.

There were 1,065 entry forms submitted during the four weeks.  While 47% of the entries were from residents of Westfield, applicants originated from as far away as Canada, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland and Washington.  This demonstrates that Westfield truly lives up to its name of ‘Welcome Home to Westfield’ during the holiday season.

The first week’s drawing held on December 3rd featured $150 winner Glenn Karaban of Westfield.  The $100 winner was Daniel Brotman of Westfield, while the $50 winner was Cathy D’alttillo of Roselle Park. Kristen Lee of Scotch Plains won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.

The second week’s winners on December 10 were  James Ng of Westfield ($150 drawing), Leslie Bauer of Princeton ($100 drawing), and Paula Long of Westfield ($50 drawing).  Joann Lund of Westfield won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.

The third week’s winners on December 17 were Elvira Rettino of Westfield  ($150 drawing), Pamela Reihenberg of Cranford ($100 drawing),and  Mary CIrillo of Scotch Plains ($50 drawing).  Sandra Hernandez of Union  won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.

The last drawing held on December 24 was won by Dale Hagstrom of Westfield ($150 drawing), Kate Warren of Westfield ($100 drawing), and Kimberly Rusinko of Linden ($50 drawing).  The bonus drawing for the $20 parking card was won by Maureen Bryce of Ocean, NJ.

The ‘Miracle on Elm Street’ Winners selected gift cards or certificates which were purchased by the DWC at the following downtown businesses:  Banana Republic, Running Company, Hershey’s Deli, Aerosole, Game Stop, Learning Express, Adler’s, Rialto Digiplex Destinations, Lord & Taylor, Westfield Service League, AT&T, Chocolate Bar, Chez Catherine, Chico’s, Brick Oven, Eileen Fisher, Cosimo’s, Xocolatz, Trader Joe’s, Rockn Joe Coffeehouse + Bistro, and Limani Seafood Grill.

According to Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation, “We are pleased with the level of participation, not only with the community but also the merchants and restaurants which have embraced this promotion and encouraged their customers to enter the contest.  From the time we started this promotion in 2008, we have seen a 281% increase in the number of entries.  This year, we also added the name of the business where the applicant entered in order to determine where shoppers and diners went in downtown.   The top businesses who encouraged their customers to enter the contest included Eileen Fisher, Sole, Robert Treat Delicatessen, and Ann Taylor.

Power is restored, downtown back in business!
Photo-2_medium

With the power out in our downtown district since Saturday night's hurricane Irene, traffic lights, shops and restaurants have been dark and quiet. However, PSE&G has been working hard along with the Dept of Public Works to remove downed trees and fix power lines.  The power has been restored to most of downtown (except some businesses on South Avenue, Elmer Street, and the west side of North Avenue) as of mid day Monday. Most stores and restaurants are back to business as usual.  Thank you for your support!

Good Morning America Films Segment in Westfield

A Westfield mom and her two children were featured on "Good Morning America" (GMA), the New York City based ABC morning show, for a segment focused on encouraging kids to continue learning during the long, lazy, days of summer.  The GMA producers asked Westfield mom Debbie Abrams Kaplan and her two children, Dori, 10, and Zack, 8, to be included. Cameras rolled downtown as producers followed the family from The Town Book Store, to the Savory Spice Shop, and Alan's Orchard. The Heat is ON! Please Water Your Plants and Planters!
Westfield_in_bloom_2011_logo_medium

It's that time of the year again. Yes, Westfield is officially in bloom. The pink and white perennials that line the streets of Central Ave and hang from the light poles downtown are only a tiny part of this year's Westfield in Bloom initiative. Thanks to both volunteers and local businesses and organizations, improvements can be seen in not just the downtown area, but throughout all of Westfield.

We need YOUR help to make Westfield even more beautiful. Judges from American in Bloom will arrive August 1 and 2 (in less than a month!), and there is still much to be done. This is where you come in.

Please water your gardens, plants, planters and pots. In this heat, frequent watering will keep our flowers in bloom. With your help we can make our downtown a beautiful place to live, work and visit, one planter box at a time.

Rialto Theatre’s Live Comedy Brings Uncut Hilarity to Westfield
Rialto_comedy_night_5-25-11_medium

By Jamie Lemberg

(Westfield, NJ, May 26, 2011) – Wednesday night’s stand-up comedy show at the Rialto Theatre brought incredibly raw and hilarious live comedy to Downtown Westfield. As laughter filled the air it was hard to believe this kind of live performance was right here in our politically correct suburban town.

For 90 minutes in one of the movie theater rooms, the Rialto Theatre turned into a comedy club, minus the liquor, cover charge and waitress service.

Performances featured three stand-up comedians from the hottest comedy clubs in Manhattan. The MC of the show was Sandy Marks, a verbose and rambling fast-paced stand up comedian who has appeared on the CBS sitcom The King Of Queens, and HBO's summer festival Comedy In The Park. Next up was Jon Fisch, a staple of the New York scene and a favorite on Comedy Central and VH1. He is a prolific monologist with universal appeal, often focusing on the idiosyncrasies of city living. At the Gotham Comedy Club, he was hand picked to open for Jerry Seinfeld. Third was Lynne Koplitz, a regular at comedy clubs nationwide. She was a featured comedian on Comedy Central's Premium Blend, and guest starred on NBC's Extra and NBC's The Other Half.

Although billed with a PG-13 rating, this sometimes explicit show could be viewed by some as rated R. Lights and sound system need to be adjusted for the next show, but the audience was howling and clapping for more. No doubt it will be packed for the next show on June 28th as word of mouth spreads about this new event.

The Comedy Series will continue June 28, July 25, Aug. 23, and Sept. 22. Check the website for performers and show times. Advance tickets are available to all shows. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets for $20 can be purchased at the box office or online at www.digiplexdest.com.

The address for the Rialto Theatre is 250 East Broad Street, Westfield, N.J. Their phone number is 908. 232.1288.

In addition to commercial movies and this comedy series, Digiplex theaters offer a full range of alternative programming such as pop concerts, live sports events, motivational talks, religious ceremonies, and children's series. The Rialto Theater of Westfield, along with the theater in Cranford, N.J. and Bloomfield, Conn., are the first three Digiplex Destinations theaters in the nation.  They are the foundation of a chain of all-digital theaters that digital theater pioneer and entrepreneur A. Dale "Bud" Mayo is building across the U.S. with his team at Digital Cinema Destinations Corp., located above the Rialto Theater of Westfield.

New Chef and New Decor at Acquaviva delle fonti in Westfield
Img_0827_medium

If you've not wandered into the all-new Acquaviva delle fonti, you definitely must do so. Completely reconfigured and designed with an entirely new focus, the all-new luxurious environment must be credited to owner Mick Acquaviva’s youngest brother, Bekim who sought the assistance of designer Caitlyn Laskey. Guests wandering into the warmly designed dining room are seated in comfortable black leather chairs surrounded by gorgeous wall decor.

Should you wish to just stay for drinks, a stunning lounge has been furnished with stand-alone high tables and chairs, regular-sized tables, upholstered banquettes with toss pillows, and a lovely service bar. Here again, you’ll appreciate the interesting wall decor.

For those contemplating a party or celebration, wander upstairs, and enjoy the surroundings in any of their lovely party rooms located on the second level of the restaurant.

“We serve a variety of cocktails, and a very nice selection of wine by the glass or bottle, adds Bekim Acquaviva. “Our Bar Menu offers Saffron Steamed Mussels white wine, croutons, saffron cream, ($9). Garlic Shrimp, lemon, parsley, pepperoncini, ($12), Crab Cakes, lemon aioli, herb salad, tomato vinaigrette, ($11), and Caramelized Melon wrapped in prosciutto, ($8).”

“Our menu changes weekly, according to the season, and what is fresh at the market,” adds Chef Tom Pollio who credits his talent from working at restaurants in Los Angeles. “My vision for Acquaviva is to serve the best food in a comfortable environment.”

With a menu filled with appetizers of Garlic Shrimp, lemon, parsley and pepperoncini, ($12), guests frequent order Crispy Fried Calamari, roasted garlic aioli, spicy pomodoro sauce, ($8), and Bufalo Mozzarella, roasted tomatoes, basil pesto, crostini, ($11). Two popular salads feature: Roasted Beet Salad, apples, bleu cheese, arugula, pistachio vinaigrette, ($8), and Artichoke salad, parmesan-lemon vinaigrette, parmesan, tuile, ($10); Popular dinner choices include: Balsamic Glazed Beef Short Ribs, mashed potatoes, cipollini onions, baby arugula, ($25); Pan roasted salmon, fingerling potatoes, white asparagus, mustard sauce, ($23); and Filet Mignon, horseradish potatoes, charred spring onions, bleu cheese butter, ($32).

“At Acquaviva, we’re serving American cuisine with Mediterranean influences,” adds Julie Christen, Wine Steward.

“Chef Tom Pollio prides himself on using fresh ingredients for all of his dishes,” adds Bekim Acquaviva. “Our speciaties of the house feature seafood, steak, chops, and short ribs. Our lunch menu offers an assortment of salads and sandwiches.”

“We’re always happy to assist our customers with all of their needs,” adds Mety Ibray, Assistant Manager. “Let us help you plan your party or celebration,” adds Stuart Stanzione, Floor Manager.

Of course you're welcome to order tiramisu for dessert. I chose a delicious warm brownie with house-made coffee ice cream. ($7).

Westfield Landmark Ferraro's to Rebuild; Off Site Locations Open for Business

by Lori Kaplan 9:36PM on May 17 2011

Ferraro's Restaurant has been a downtown fixture in Westfield since it opened its doors in 1969.  As a resident of Westfield all my life (I did leave for four years of college), I cannot imagine life here without their delicious Italian food and the Ferrraros’ warm and loving smiles always there to greet you.   I mean, where else can you go to dinner in town with your family and order everything from fish to pizza to a cosmo!!

Without dating myself, I moved to Westfield at two years of age, and my family began eating at Ferraro's when it was a tiny pizzeria.   Anna and Palmiro Ferraro migrated from Italy to Jersey City. As luck had it for us, they happened to be reading an Italian newspaper where they saw a pizzeria for sale in Westfield. The rest of course is history.

"Ferraro's has grown so much over the years, expanding from a pizzeria to include a formal dining room followed by a larger casual dining room and lounge area.  We have always wanted to accommodate all of our customers dining needs by providing a quiet more intimate dining and a separate more casual dining experience for families of all sizes.   Our customers are family to us and their happiness is most important to us,” Maria Ferrraro Murray told me.
