Westfield in Bloom Efforts Earn ‘Four Bloom’ Rating
Westfield_in_bloom_planters_on_elm_-_reduced_medium

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After months of anxious waiting, winners of the prestigious 2011 America in Bloom national awards program were announced at the annual awards held in Washington, D.C. on October 8. Westfield was judged on eight criteria: tidiness, community involvement, environmental awareness, heritage, urban forestry, landscape, floral displays, and turf and ground covers across three sectors: municipal, residential and commercial. Specially trained judges visited towns of similar populations and spent two days touring the town, meeting municipal officials, residents and volunteers. Westfield received a four bloom rating with special recognition for its efforts in environmental awareness. The judges, Melanie Menachem-Riggs and Billy Butterfield, noted that the Westfield Memorial Library’s installation of a solar panel system makes it a leader in environmental awareness. Registrations for the 2012 national awards program can be submitted until February 28, 2012.

America in Bloom is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting nationwide beautification programs and personal and community involvement through the use of flowers, plants, trees and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. America in Bloom provides educational programs, resources and the challenge of a friendly competition between participating communities across the country. For more information, visit americainbloom.org.

For the last three years of competition, Westfield in Bloom efforts were co-led by Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation and David Williams of Williams Nursery.  For more information about Westfield in Bloom, visit www.westfieldinbloom.com.

Beat the Summer Heat!

During the warm summer months, it is natural to want to get outside and take advantage of the welcoming sunshine.  However, according to Becky Seasholtz, Director for Bayada Nurses office in Westfield, for children and adults with disabilities, too much of a good thing, in this case, warm weather, can pose serious health threats.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat stroke happens when the body can no longer control its temperature.  The body’s temperature rises fast.  The body cannot sweat and in unable to cool itself.  Heat stroke can cause death or disability if not treated right away.  Warning signs include:

  • Red, hot, dry skin
  • Very high body temperature
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion and irritability
  • Strange behavior
  • Unconsciousness
  • Rapid pulse
  • Throbbing headache
  • Rapid and shallow breathing

Heat exhaustion is a milder illness that happens when the body has lost too much water and salt in sweat.  If it is not treated, it can turn into heat stroke.  Warning signs include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Cramps
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Pale and dark colored urine

“There are many reasons why people with disabilities are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” said Seasholtz.  “Certain medications can cause mouth dryness, increase sensitivity to the sun, change ability to reason, or impair the body’s ability to regulate temperature or perspire”.

According to Seasholtz, children with an impaired thirst mechanism may need additional fluids while in the summer sun.  In addition, some children who are neurologically impaired cannot tolerate prolonged exposure to higher temperatures without significant effect on their core body temperature.  These children should avoid outdoor activities during the heat of day.  Efforts should be make to provide air conditioning in the bedroom, school busses and classrooms to avoid serious reactions to the heat.

“The heat can also have a negative effect on children with asthma or chronic lung diseases,” said Seasholtz.   “During the heat of day, the air quality index can be poor, making it difficult for these children to breathe.  Staying indoors in an air conditioned environment is important to keep these children healthy”.

Adults with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should also avoid the strong summer sun.  As heat and humidity increase, ozone levels increase, which can trigger asthma attacks and make it difficult for people with COPD to breathe.  If possible, older adults should stay in an air conditioned environment during the hottest hours of the day, either at home or a public place such as a library, a mall or recreation center.  Bayada Nurses can provide home health aides who can accompany older adults who have difficulty getting out on their own.

According to Seasholtz, there are certain medical conditions that can upset the body’s normal response to heat.  These include thyroid diseases, high blood pressure, heart/circulatory problems, cancer, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes or lupus.

To avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke:

·         Stay in an air conditioned area

·         Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine, or a lot of sugar

·         Drink fluids at least 30 minutes before going outside

·         Apply sunscreen SPF 15 or higher at least 30 minutes prior to going outside, even on cloudy days. Re-apply every two hours or after swimming or sweating

·         Wear wide-brimmed hats, and light-colored, loose fitting clothes

·         Eat more frequently, and be sure meals are well-balanced, cool, and light

·         Avoid outdoor activities from 10am to 4pm, which is the hottest part of the day

·         Use a buddy system by checking in on those who are elderly or who have a disability

If heat stroke is suspected, get medical help immediately by calling a physician or 911.  Get the victim to a shady area and if possible, cool the victim off with a cool water or damp sheets.  Only give the victim fluids by mouth if they have a normal mental state and can tolerate it.  Direct air onto the person with a fan or paper.  .

If heat exhaustion is suspected, give the victim cool, nonalcoholic beverages, a cool shower or sponge bath.  Lay the person down, elevate the legs and feet slightly, and lossen the person’s clothing.  Also, make sure the victim rests, and is moved into an air conditioned environment.  If symptoms are severe, get medical attention immediately.

For more information on home care for children and adults with disabilities, call 908-789-1717.

DWC Seeks Volunteers

Westfield, NJ – Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) is currently seeking new volunteers to serve on the Design, Economic Development, Promotions, Organization and Westfield in Bloom committees as part of its comprehensive Main Street approach to downtown revitalization.

According to Sherry Cronin, Executive Director, “Today’s volunteers have limited time and seek opportunites to make a difference in their communities.  With all the activities being planned this year and the growth we have experienced in providing valuable service to our businesses and the community, we welcome additional help.  We have a very experienced and knowledgeable team of volunteers who work very hard to make downtown Westfield a great place to be”.   For more information, contact the DWC at 908-789-9444 or visit www.WestfieldToday.com.

WestfieldToday Has a New Look
Website_screenshot_-_new_look_3

March 14, 2011 -- The Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) has redesigned their website www.westfieldtoday.com for the commercial/ business district of Westfield after more than 15 years of a destination web presence.  The new site gives easier and more graphical access to news, promotions and events which are taking place in downtown Westfield.

The site makes content easy to find and organizes it in a way that people want to view. There are new buttons for ‘Grand Openings’, ‘Food & Wine’, and “Best Bets’. Jamie Lemberg, Online Marketing Manager for the DWC, commented, “Through usage reports from our email newsletter which regularly features these columns, we know that these new categories are most interesting to our readers.”

While the old site featured information about popular downtown annual events, such as the Sweet Sounds Downtown Jazz Festival and the 5K Pizza & Extravaganza , these events are now featured more prominently on the home page. The site also has an events calendar of all upcoming events.

“We tried to design it with a more modern and graphical magazine look, said Beth Brenner, DWC’s Asst. Executive Director. “ Before it was very informational, but now it’s also pleasant to navigate the site.”

Westfield businesses are encouraged to add their own listing page to the site. This community feature allows stores, restaurants and organizations to not only have a presence, but issue their own news and promotions directly on the site. While this was always the case, this ability has been simplified, giving the downtown businesses easier visibility online. Businesses can also link back to their own web sites from their listing page.

The Rialto Theatre is prominent on the home page and movie times have been automated for greater reliability.  A new Arts & Entertainment section features an array of theater and concert venues in town.

Other content areas which are now easy to access include information for those looking to open a new business and view available commercial space, volunteer opportunities, parking information, driving directions, and town history.

Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of the DWC, added “We are pleased to bring a more robust web site to the business community. Our job is to promote the downtown, and this new web site as well as our downtown Facebook page, helps bring more online presence to our businesses.”

The Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC), formed in 1996, is the management entity of the Special Improvement District. It is governed by a seven member Board of Directors, has two full-time and one part-time staff members, and numerous volunteers serving on Design, Promotion, Economic Development and Organization committees. The vision of the DWC is for Westfield, NJ to be a preferred destination where people want to live, work, and visit.  Westfield is also honored to be one of 26 designated Main Street Communities in New Jersey , a program of the National Trust’s National Main Street Center .  For the latest happenings, event information, and promotional offers from Westfield businesses, check out www.WestfieldToday.com

Graciously sponsored by the beautiful James Ward Mansion at 169 East Broad Street, the day will feature food, dessert and wine tastings, and highly valued raffle giveaways, including a free honeymoon at Breezes Grand Resort and Spa in Negril, Jamaica for a lucky couple.  Admission is $5 per person payable at the door and parking is free.

The event coordinator is Amy Mankin of Mademoiselle in Westfield. Said Mankin, “We have so many specialty stores in and around Westfield that can offer a bride high quality services and merchandise, with a personal touch. I wanted to put all of them under one roof to show off the variety of what we have to offer. What makes this event so different from other bridal shows is the venue. The James Ward Mansion is the ultimate background for an elegant and intimate shopping experience. We want to invite brides or anyone planning an affair to come and take advantage of a very unique opportunity.

For more information and to RSVP visit www.thewestfieldaffair.com.  The first 50 RSVPs will receive a fabulous giftbag at the door.

Restaurant Week will be underway in Westfield, so participants can enjoy a 2-course, price fixed $10 lunch or $20 dinner either before or after “The Westfield Affair.”  Reservations are recommended; please call the restaurants directly to reserve.

Young Volunteers Take to the Streets
Westfield_in_bloom_young_volunteers_-_saved_for_web_medium

The Town of Westfield is gearing up for the annual “America in Bloom” competition (locally known as ‘Westfield in Bloom’) as the Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) and Williams Nursery co-lead the effort for Westfield to be considered for the 2010 "America in Bloom" award. Westfield is among 28 towns nationwide to compete this year. Westfield has the distinction of being the only town in the state of NJ to participate in the 2009 and 2010 competition.

Judges will be heading to Westfield on July 12 and 13 to view and critique various landscapes, homes and business fronts for the annual America in Bloom Competition. Final results will be announced in October at the national symposium. In 2009, Westfield received a four-bloom rating out of a possible five bloom rating (a significant achievement for a first-year competing community) and special mention for the Floral Displays category.

For local information about Westfield's involvement, to volunteer or to participate by submitting stories and photos of your Westfield residence, businesses or outdoor environment contact Sherry Cronin at the DWC or Dave Williams at Williams Nursery at info@westfieldinbloom.com. To inquire about the national program, contact America in Bloom at 614-487-1117 or visit www.americainbloom.org.

Photo caption;  Young volunteers Emily Kirschner, Sara Kirschner (and their father, Joe Kirschner), Isabella Salerno, and Lauren Fazio took to the streets to clean up Central Avenue underpass and to plant some flowers around the trees. As part of the Westfield in Bloom initiative, they are proud of the work they accomplished and encourage other young volunteers to get involved.

Westfield Historical Society Annual Dinner Honors Many
Historical_society_dinner_2010_medium

The Westfield Historical Society held its 41st Annual Dinner Meeting on May 26, 2010 at Echo Lake Country Club and proudly hosted a record crowd.  The Thomas Glasser Foundation was honored for its leading gift to the Reeve House project and its important philanthropic work in the community.  Lee M. Hale presented the award to Gerry Glasser on behalf of The Thomas Glasser Foundation.  Sherry Cronin presented The Presidents’ Award to Karrie Hanson for her commitment to the Westfield Historical Society and for leading the Reeve House Building Committee.  Marilyn Shields was honored with The Trustees’ Award for her revered work as a landscape architect in many Westfield landscapes amd gardens.   Karrie Hanson presented Letty Hudak with a Trustee Emerita award and George Gross with a Trustee Emeritus award.

In addition, the Westfield Historical Society Selection Committee inducted five individuals/families into the Westfield Hall of Fame. This is the second year that the Historical Society has inducted prominent Westfield residents into its Hall of Fame.  All the nominees are accomplished in their fields, as well as having made a significant impact on the town, the state or the nation. “The list of inductees suggests that the community has fostered people of importance and achievement,” said Lee M. Hale, Chairman of the Selection Committee. Members of the Hall of Fame will be permanently honored at the Reeve House History and Cultural Center, located at 314 Mountain Avenue in Westfield. The Reeve House is being rehabilitated and restored as the historical society’s permanent home and educational center.

The 2010 inductees of the Westfield Historical Society Hall of Fame included:

1) Charles Apgar (1830-1915) – Known as the “wireless wizard” for his pivotal role in saving British and American freighters during World War I, he assisted the Secret Service in shutting down a German wireless station that was broadcasting tips to German U boats about approaching Allied merchant ships. He built and developed one of the most powerful wireless radio systems in his house on Carleton Road.

2) Sigismund Ivanowski (1874-1944) – A graduate of the St. Petersburg Academy and a renowned portrait artist, he came to the Westfield /Mountainside area with his wife, Helen Moser, and established a studio in his house on Mountain Avenue. It was there that he painted portraits of Admiral George Melville and Theodore Roosevelt, both of whose paintings are in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

3) Jeff Torborg (1941-  ) – An All State Catcher at Westfield High School and an All American at Rutgers, he spent 10 years in major league baseball with the Dodgers and the Angels, where he caught no-hitters for Sandy Koufax, Bill Singer and Nolan Ryan. Mr. Torborg went on to serve as a major league manager for Cleveland, the White Sox, the Mets, the Montreal Expos and the Florida Marlins.

4) The Fairbairns – Robert M. Fairbairn (1839- 1891) lived in Westfield when the population was 800 and all the roads were dirt. As chairman of the Township Committee, he set about financing and improving township roads with crushed stone and gravel. His son, Robert A. Fairbairn (1866-1951), was active in many Westfield and New York City business and civic organizations, but was best known as a sportsman. In 1900, he built and owned the Fair Acres Drivers Club, a half-mile harness racing track. His greatest triumph was as the breeder of the 1940 Kentucky Derby winner Gallahadion and the 1945 winner Hoop Jr.

5) William Reeve (1872-1963): One of the founders of the Westfield YMCA, Mr. Reeve was responsible for the World War I monument at the town center. Perhaps his most enduring contributions were the donation of the 11 acres that became Mindowaskin Park and later the donation of his family home, which is now the Reeve House History and Cultural Center.

The Addams Family, A New Musical
Addams_letters_-_cropped_for_web_medium

With this month's debut of "THE ADDAMS FAMILY, A NEW MUSICAL" on Broadway, cartoonist and Westfield native Charles Addams was honored by two special events.

At an unveiling ceremony at Westfield High School on April 5, there was an outdoor art exhibit of the letters that spell out ADDAMS. Conceived by Ronald MacCloskey, the founder of the Charles Addams Scholarship Fund, the letters were uniquely decorated by students from Westfield High School, Roosevelt Intermediate School and Edison Intermediate School. The artwork on the letters focused on original themes and drawings of Charles Addams' work.

"I wanted a cross between the Hollywood sign and the Cow Parade," MacCloskey said, citing the public art exhibit of ceramic cows throughout Manhattan.

The letters will become a public art exhibit for the community. They will first be displayed for several weeks at the schools. The Downtown Westfield Corporation helped fund this effort and plans to use them as public art around the business district. According to DWC Executive Director Sherry Cronin, the letters will be on exhibit in October, in time for Halloween.

Also in celebration of the upcoming musical, an Addams Family Autographed Poster was auctioned on eBay, March 23rd through Thursday, April 1, 2010. The original, brand new, full color poster from THE ADDAMS FAMILY, A NEW MUSICAL was donated by the producers of the Broadway show. It was signed by members of the cast, which include the stars, Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. The poster was professionally framed by Galeria West, 111 Quimby Street, and was put up for auction with assistance from the DWC.

The poster sold on eBay for $442. The net profits will be given to the Charles Addams Art Scholarship. Each year a student who is majoring in art and graduating from Westfield High School in Westfield is awarded the money.

Charles Addams created the original "kooky" Addams Family characters as a cartoonist for the New Yorker Magazine.
