Westfield Announcements
Announcements for News
(February 1, 2012) – The Westfield Memorial Library is pleased to announce that the Westfield Memorial Library Foundation recently donated the needed funds to pay for the re-upholstery of nine chairs and love seats in the Youth Services Department.
Dressed in jewel tones of sage green, mermaid blue, grape and coral, the three love seats, two adult chairs and four children’s chairs are covered in a durable, easy-to-clean material that coordinates with the gaily patterned carpet.
Foundation President Roger Sullivan said, “This project was on the library’s wish list and our organization was thrilled to help fund this worthy project. Seeing children enjoy their time at the library is very rewarding experience, and our foundation hopes to help fund other projects of this kind-- as our funds allow.”
He added that “collaborations between public and private enterprises represent a very logical and effective model, especially during difficult economic times. Through our joint efforts, it is hoped that the library can always maintain its special role in the community –as a center of learning and enjoyment for residents of all ages.”
Coordinator of Youth Services Kathy Muhm said, “The library is very grateful to the Library Foundation for this special gift, which serves to make our space so much more welcoming to all our families.”
The Westfield Memorial Library Foundation seeks to provide long-term support for the Library through a variety of fund-raising strategies. These include individual and corporate donations, fundraising events, long-term capital campaigns and legacy giving. The Foundation stands ready to assist the Library with large projects such as building or renovation campaigns; also with funding for programs and services that may be jeopardized because of increased pressure on local and state budgets.
All donations to the Foundation are tax deductible. For more information, visit wmlfoundation.org, or call 908.248.4542.

The family-owned record store, lost to a six-alarm fire Sunday evening, was a second home to many.
Last night, we stood in the Midas parking lot on South Avenue, and watched our memories burn. We stood and watched as Sound Station, and the surrounding businesses, became ashes. What seemed like the last row of family-owned businesses in Westfield, is now gone.
And as we stood with Bob Larsen, owner of Sound Station, we just didnt know what to say. I stared through the shattered front window at the horror movie mask they had propped up on a display behind the counter. It used to have my best friends decorated graduation cap on top of it.

NY REAL ESTATE RESIDENTIAL JANUARY 14, 2012 --
New Arrivals, Longtimers Mix in Westfield
By MELANIE LEFKOWITZ
The town of Westfield, in New Jersey's Union County, blends a sophisticated downtown, lined with high-end stores and art galleries, with a small-town atmosphere, thanks to its close-knit community and historic homes.
Westfield's mix of cosmopolitan and bucolic draws young families from New York and Hoboken, as well as the grown children of longtime residents. Brokers say they also have seen increasing numbers of work-related relocations, as people moving to work in the New York area for a few years are attracted to Westfield's schools, central location and varied housing stock.
The DWC appreciates the support of the recent Welcome Home to Westfield holiday events 2011. The events starting with Photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus through the holiday entertainment of carolers, bagpipers, and alphorn concerts, free parking, and Miracle on Elm Street shopping spree contests provided a festive holiday shopping and dining destination.
Special thanks to Lord & Taylor for co-sponsoring the Photos with Santa & Mrs. Claus event, and The Westfield Inn for providing overnight accommodations for Santa & Mrs. Claus. For the tree lighting event, special thanks to the Westfield Special Police force, the Fire Department who escorted Santa & Mrs. Claus from Lord & Taylor, Brummer's Chocolates for the gummy bear treats for the children, First United Methodist Youth Group for the hot chocolate, the Lion's Club of Westfield for the apple cider and the Westfield Community Band for the musical entertainment.
The DWC also hosted a Holiday Open House, an annual event to honor the businesses and volunteers who contribute to the success of Downtown Westfield. Special thanks to the following downtown eating establishments for donating delicious food for this 'Taste of the Town' event: Alan's Orchard, Acquaviva della fonti, Bovella's Pastry Shoppe, Casa di Pizza, Chez Catherine, Cosimo's Restarant & Pizzeria, Crumbs Bake Shop, Ferraro's, Isabella's, Jeffrey's, Limani Seafood Grill, Robert Treat Delicatessen, Rockn' Joe Coffeehouse + Bistro, Splash of Thai, Swirl Whirl, Mojave Grill, Wild Greens, and Xocolatz.
Thanks also to the Town of Westfield Mayor and Town Council for the gift of free holiday parking Dec. 20 - 26. Shoppers and businesses really appreciated it.
Mostly, thanks to everyone who supported the local businesses and chose Downtown Westfield for their holiday shopping, dining and entertainment!

On Saturday, December 3rd, 2011, 24 Union County Master Gardeners worked side-by-side with the Westfield Y’s Men’s Club Association to unload a delivery of 450 fir trees for the Y’s Men’s 63rd annual Christmas Tree Sale. This is the fifth year (since 2007) in which the Master Gardeners have toted trees on the first Saturday in December at the Y’s Men’s Tree Lot, corner of Elm and Maple Streets in Westfield. The event was hosted by Y’s Man and Co-Yard Boss Bill Rugg (kneeling by sign). MG participation is coordinated annually by Master Gardener T.J. Karns (front row, 4th from left, blue coat, sun glasses), who describes it as “one of our circle of helping hands community service good deeds.” Says Karns, “The Y’s Men give our volunteer group a donation every year, and we respond by helping them unload their trees.”
Hours through December 23rd for the Y’s Men’s Annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale are: Monday through Friday, 3:30 to 9pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 9am to 6pm. “And be sure to check out their Christmas Tree stand,” advises Karns. “It’s the sturdiest and easiest tree stand that we have ever used in our home!"

WESTFIELD, NJ - On Wednesday evening, the Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) held an annual holiday open house celebrating the vibrant business community of Westfield. Dominick Verdic, President of the DWC Board of Directors, presented Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of the DWC, with a plaque in honor of her 10 years there. Local business owners enjoyed the chance to chat together, and all enjoyed the food provided by Westfield restaurants.
“This is one of the must-come-to events. Where else can you see all of the other business owners under one roof at one time?” said Jay Tintle, owner, Jay’s Cycle Center, a family-run shop that has been in Westfield for over 50 years. Tintle is proud to be a Westfield mom-and-pop shop owner. “It’s such a great community,” he said.
Despite the pouring rain, “It’s a great turnout,” said Cronin. Motioning to the tables of food, she said, “It’s a lot easier to have a taste-of-the-town when you have so many wonderful restaurants. We appreciate their help putting it all together.”

On Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4th, a joyous crowd gathered for the Grand Celebration of the redesigned and enlarged Evalyn Dunn Gallery on South Avenue in Westfield. Founded by Evalyn and Benjamin Dunn, parents of Proprietor Jaclyn Civins, guests took time to stroll the gallery as they sipped wine and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres.
Boasting the essence of style and design, Jaclyn Civins captured the panache of Worth Ave., in Palm Beach, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, 5th Avenue, Park Avenue, and the exciting Soho in Manhattan. As a curator, The Evalyn Dunn Gallery continues to be a local venue for the exhibition and presentation for the finest 21st Century American and European artists around the world.
Enter the gallery and become totally mesmerized by enormous paintings of magnificent gardens artistically suspended from the ceiling. Bursting in vivid colors of Purple as in Iris, Yellow as in Daffodils, and White as in Snapdragons, you’re completely ensconced in a replica of Monet’s Garden. And while it is easy to imagine a walk down a vivid path leading to a charming cottage painted Yellow, with Kelly Green shutters and a Purple roof, suspended just below this Ron Hedrick work of art, is the Essence of Vancouver--Light! Note the preponderance of sunlight and shadows as they carry you down a path to perhaps a lake, pond, or secret garden.
As featured artists of the Gallery, Ron Hedrick and his daughter Jessica are known for “The Essence of Light,” their fantastic landscapes, and their fine collection of ballet dancers.
“We discovered the Hedrick family while on a tour of Vancouver,” said Civins. “The father-daughter team concentrate on landscapes as well as figurative works of art.”
Divided into specific areas, pass the “Gardens’ and enter the ‘World of Destinations’. From Spain, to Paris, then Venice, and back to Rome, Italy, you’re quickly whisked up to Ben and Jerry’s Vermont, before heading down to Central Park, where you’re privy to blossoms, exotic automobiles, and a special department specifically designed for the selection of frames in all shapes and sizes. And of course, more paintings. This time by Michele Byrne of Pennsylvania who says, “It is my intention to live the rest of my life as an artist. For, I believe art and life are inseparable.”
New to the Evalyn Dunn Gallery is a selection of giftware. A selection of original pastels are signed, dated, and framed for a mere $28. Then charming, mini bud vases, perfect for lavender or teeny buds, are available in assorted colors of burnt orange, red, purple, and tobacco, ($38).
Along with all of the bibelots displayed on the walls and shelves of this 2300 sq. ft. gallery, do remember it’s the place to visit for custom framing. Rest assured a certified framer will do his best to present your work exactly as you’ve always dreamed it would appear on your wall.
But there is even a greater attraction for those that truly admire fine and precious art. Off to a corner, Jacie Civins proudly displays original works by Renoir, Degas, and Whistler. Thus an even greater reason to visit the The Evalyn Dunn Gallery. Savor the pleasure of positive comments, as you chat about all of the gorgeous artwork you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy.

Westfield, NJ – November 2011 – Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) is one of eight organizations to receive a Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB) 2011 Graffiti Hurts® Grant Program award. The annual grants were initiated in 2007 to help support grassroots programs that combat graffiti vandalism. This year, KAB expanded the grants program and added one additional $2,500 cash grant, three $2,500 Sherwin-Williams paint supply certificates and one Q-Star FlashCAM, valued at $6,100. The FlashCAM is a deterrent system effective in preventing illegal trespassing during hours it most often occurs.
The DWC, under the direction of Sherry Cronin, Executive Director along with the summer intern, Sarah Hoffman applied for the grant with encouragement from Main Street NJ State Director Jef Buehler. The grant proposal also strengthened Westfield’s 2011 America in Bloom application in the tidiness criteria.
This year’s winners are:
$2,500 cash grant recipients:
- Casa Grande Police Department – Casa Grande, Ariz.
- Keep Victoria Beautiful – Victoria, Texas
- Boys & Girls Clubs of America of East County – Santee, Calif.
- Keep Manatee Beautiful – Bradenton, Fla.
$2,500 Sherwin –Williams paint supply certificate recipients:
- Downtown Westfield Corporation – Westfield, N.J.
- Downtown Visalians – Visalia, Calif.
- Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership – Pittsburgh, Penn.
Q-Star FlashCAM recipient:
- Tyler Against Graffiti – Tyler, Texas
“This year’s grant recipients presented exceptional plans to educate and engage at-risk youth, and to bring entire communities together to prevent and eradicate graffiti,” said Matthew McKenna, President and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. “All of the winners developed programs that help prevent negative impacts to society through behavior change, while creating a sense of ownership for their community. We’re grateful to The Sherwin-Williams Company for its ongoing support of the Graffiti Hurts program, a nationwide resource for addressing graffiti problems.”
Responding to the blight of graffiti vandalism, Graffiti Hurts® was developed in 1996 through a partnership between Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s largest nonprofit education and community improvement organization, and The Sherwin-Williams Company (NYSE: SHW), maker of Krylon paint. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, graffiti contributes to lost revenue associated with reduced ridership on transit systems, reduced retail sales, and declines in the value of surrounding residential and commercial property.
“Sherwin-Williams is proud to sponsor the Graffiti Hurts program, and is dedicated to supporting initiatives that help prevent and eradicate graffiti,” said Harvey Sass, President and General Manager, Diversified Brands Division, The Sherwin-Williams Company. “Graffiti Hurts is effectively addressing this issue nationwide, and we commend the 2011 grant winners for their innovative plans to help stop graffiti in their communities.”
The Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) formed in 1996, is the management entity of the Special Improvement District. It is governed by a seven member Board of Directors, has two full-time and one part-time staff members and numerous volunteers serving on Design, Promotion, Economic Development and Organization Committees. The vision of the DWC is for Westfield, NJ to be a preferred destination where people want to live, work and visit. Westfield is also honored to be one of 26 designated Main Street Communities in New Jersey, a program of the National Trust’s National Main Street Center. Westfield is also honored to win the 2010 America in Bloom national award for Landscaped Areas and win in its population category among all the towns entered in the America in Bloom 2010 competition.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After months of anxious waiting, winners of the prestigious 2011 America in Bloom national awards program were announced at the annual awards held in Washington, D.C. on October 8. Westfield was judged on eight criteria: tidiness, community involvement, environmental awareness, heritage, urban forestry, landscape, floral displays, and turf and ground covers across three sectors: municipal, residential and commercial. Specially trained judges visited towns of similar populations and spent two days touring the town, meeting municipal officials, residents and volunteers. Westfield received a four bloom rating with special recognition for its efforts in environmental awareness. The judges, Melanie Menachem-Riggs and Billy Butterfield, noted that the Westfield Memorial Library’s installation of a solar panel system makes it a leader in environmental awareness. Registrations for the 2012 national awards program can be submitted until February 28, 2012.

(September 21, 2011) – As of October 3, the Westfield Memorial Library will have four e-readers that patrons can borrow for up to two weeks at a time. Two of the e-readers are Barnes and Noble nooks, and two are Sony Readers.
If you’re having a little trouble keeping up with the technology, an e-reader is a hand-held, electronic reader that allows users to access and read thousands of books within one device. Lighter than a paperback, the nook and Sony Reader have a 6 inch touch screen, weigh a little over 6 ounces, and hold thousands of books, magazines and newspapers.
“An e-reader is like having a library within one hand-held gadget,” said Jen Schulze, head of adult services. “They are easy to hold and easy to read, even in bright sunlight.”
Both types of e-readers will be pre-loaded with different popular fiction and non-fiction titles such as “State of Wonder” by Anna Patchett, “Full Black” by Brad Thor, “Bossy Pants” by Tina Fey and “That Used to be Us” by Thomas Friedman.
Borrowers are not able to load titles on to the Library’s e-readers, but it is possible to place a “hold” on the device when it is unavailable.
Westfield Memorial Library Resident cardholders over the age of 18 can borrow nooks and Sony Readers. Children under the age of 18 and MURAL cardholders will not be allowed to check out the e-readers.

Mayor Andrew Skibitsky has announced plans for the Town of Westfield’s 10th Anniversary Commemoration of September 11, 2001, the national tragedy in which 12 Westfield residents lost their lives.
On Saturday evening September 10, 2011 a special 10th Anniversary Commemoration Concert will be performed by the Westfield Symphony Orchestra at 8 PM in the Presbyterian Church. The program of classical music is called America The Brave. “It is our collective hope that this moving musical tribute will celebrate the fortitude, bravery and resilience of the American people“, said Maestro David Wroe. At 1 pm Westfield will join every town and city in the country who by an Act of Congress have been asked to observe a National Moment of Remembrance. As explained by New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg “during the Moment of Remembrance each person across the country is called upon to stop and remember those we lost in the September 11th attacks. The Moment of Remembrance will take place for one full minute at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time and cities and towns, firehouses, churches and other institutions across the country are called upon to sound sirens and ring bells during that minute. The sirens and bells will be a signal for each person to stop and remember the people we lost and demonstrate the perseverance the American people have shown since that fateful day.”
Finally, at 6 pm there will be a public Interfaith Commemoration Service in Memorial Park led by Father Joseph Masiello of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Rabbi Douglas Sagal of Temple Emanu-El and Reverend David Mertz of First United Methodist Church. The service will be attended by families and neighbors of our victims, and will include musical and vocal interludes and a candlelight tribute. All residents are welcome, and it will be held rain or shine.
