(January 30, 2012) – The Westfield Memorial Library is pleased to present a new kind of storytelling event called a Story Slam on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m. The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.
A Story Slam is an event in which people tell true, five-minute stories based around a particular theme. All stories are told in front of an audience, without notes, scripts or cheat sheets. The theme for the evening of February 15 is, “Let’s Talk about Love.”
“This could be love for a spouse, child, pet, car, or even a cup of coffee,” said Jen Schulze, head of adult services. She continued, “I hold Story Slams on a quarterly basis “because people really like to have a chance to talk about the memorable events in their lives. We’re getting a good following of storytellers.”

Lisa G. Fleming, an actress and singer, presents the story of Silvia Du Bois, a New Jersey slave who was born in Hunterdon County in 1798 and who died at 120 years of age.
After her birth, she was sold to a family who moved her to New York. She obtained her freedom and moved back to New Jersey where she spent the rest of her life in the Hunterdon area. She had six children and ran a tavern she inherited from her grandfather. Her doctor interviewed her on her 116th birthday, and Lisa tells her story at this point, sitting in her rocking chair, and speaking to the people who have come to talk with her.
Post-show, Lisa and playwright Audrey Palmatier answer questions. Lisa has performed extensively throughout NY and NJ, has numerous film and TV credits and her own Management/Productions company.

Coffee With Conscience presents Americana trio Red Molly on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.
Known for their tight harmonies, lush vocals and infectous enthusiasm, Red Molly has been playing roots/Americana/bluegrass music featuring three-part harmonies with banjo, Dobro and guitar, since 2004.
The trio was originally comprised of Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Carolann Solebello. Solebello left the band and was replaced by a real-life Molly, Molly Venter.
The band, with a dedicated following known as "the RedHeads," has opened shows for artists such as Aztec Two-Step, Catie Curtis, Jonathan Edwards, Jeffrey Gaines, John Hammond, Johnsmith, Michael Smith, Bill Staines and David Wilcox.
"We played Coffee with Conscience a few years ago, but we're really excited to come back with our brand new CD 'Light in the Sky,' said Gardner, daughter of renowned jazz trombonist Herb Gardner. "The CD has been on the Americana Charts for 10 weeks now, topping at the number 10 slot, which is a great achievement for an independent band. We'll be sharing songs from this CD as well as others, and we've got Robby Hecht, an excellent songwriter, opening the show for us."
Hecht is the winner of the 2010 Telluride Troubadour Competition.
"We'll be doing two 45-minute sets, a mix of covers and originals, and we love to meet the audience after the show," said Gardner.
The Coffee With Conscience Concert Series in presented by Arrhe Maros, owner of Ahrre's Coffee Roastery in Westfield and the Fair Trade Coffee Company.
"The band is packed with tight harmonies and lots of energy," said Maros. "I tell everyone, they're like the Dixie Chicks but a lot more affordable."
While other concerts have benefited Habitat for Humanity, NJ Community FoodBank and the Interfaith Council for the Homeless, proceeds from Red Molly's performance will go toward the The Keith Knost Special Needs Fund.

WESTFIELD, N.J December 6, 2011. A poignant collection of captivating images of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York City is captured in a picture book titled September Mourning by author Dave Rossi.
New Jersey-based, award-winning photographer Dave Rossi’s 10th anniversary World Trade Center memorial picture book consists of dozens of never before published photographs of the World Trade Center. Most of these photos, were taken from the vantage point of New Jersey, and are combined with thoughts, memories, and details of the iconic buildings.
Rossi's book begins with scenic images of the distant towers from West Orange, N.J., when he was an aspiring photographer in the 1970s. The pictorial continues with several award winning images the author took over the years as a professional photographer, including the last photograph he took of the still-standing World Trade Center in September 2001, from Hoboken, N.J. The book centers on a surreal photograph of the downed buildings engulfed in smoke on September 11, 2001, which was shot from just across the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ, and includes a timeline of the events of the morning of the tragedy.
The book progresses through multiple photographs of the "Tribute in Light" memorial light displays, the new One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) under construction and a cross section of memorials in New Jersey. The memorials include a city park in Westfield, county memorials in West Orange (Essex), Springfield/Mountainside (Union) and the New Jersey State September 11 Memorial “Open Sky” just across the river from Ground Zero in Jersey City, New Jersey. Through the memorials in this book a story is told of the bravery, loss, and the remembrance that affects every American.
“September Mourning” will make a valued keepsake and good historical rated “G” reference to pass on to future generations. It pays tribute to those who lost their lives, their families, and to the courageous police, fire, civilians, and rescue workers who worked so hard and even laid down their lives not only doing their duty but also for the love of their fellow man.

The annual “Miracle on Elm Street” holiday promotion took place for the fourth straight year. Sponsored by the Downtown Westfield Corporation as part of the ‘Welcome Home to Westfield’ holiday events, the promotion encouraged people to enter a weekly drawing in downtown stores and restaurants or online and place their entry forms in two special decorated mailboxes located downtown. The weekly drawings of $150, $100, $50 offered weekly gift card prizes to downtown stores and restaurants of the winner’s choice. In addition, there was a bonus drawing for a $20 parking card each week. Winners were drawn at random on December 3, 10, 17, and 24.
There were 1,065 entry forms submitted during the four weeks. While 47% of the entries were from residents of Westfield, applicants originated from as far away as Canada, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland and Washington. This demonstrates that Westfield truly lives up to its name of ‘Welcome Home to Westfield’ during the holiday season.
The first week’s drawing held on December 3rd featured $150 winner Glenn Karaban of Westfield. The $100 winner was Daniel Brotman of Westfield, while the $50 winner was Cathy D’alttillo of Roselle Park. Kristen Lee of Scotch Plains won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.
The second week’s winners on December 10 were James Ng of Westfield ($150 drawing), Leslie Bauer of Princeton ($100 drawing), and Paula Long of Westfield ($50 drawing). Joann Lund of Westfield won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.
The third week’s winners on December 17 were Elvira Rettino of Westfield ($150 drawing), Pamela Reihenberg of Cranford ($100 drawing),and Mary CIrillo of Scotch Plains ($50 drawing). Sandra Hernandez of Union won the $20 parking card bonus drawing.
The last drawing held on December 24 was won by Dale Hagstrom of Westfield ($150 drawing), Kate Warren of Westfield ($100 drawing), and Kimberly Rusinko of Linden ($50 drawing). The bonus drawing for the $20 parking card was won by Maureen Bryce of Ocean, NJ.
The ‘Miracle on Elm Street’ Winners selected gift cards or certificates which were purchased by the DWC at the following downtown businesses: Banana Republic, Running Company, Hershey’s Deli, Aerosole, Game Stop, Learning Express, Adler’s, Rialto Digiplex Destinations, Lord & Taylor, Westfield Service League, AT&T, Chocolate Bar, Chez Catherine, Chico’s, Brick Oven, Eileen Fisher, Cosimo’s, Xocolatz, Trader Joe’s, Rockn Joe Coffeehouse + Bistro, and Limani Seafood Grill.
According to Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation, “We are pleased with the level of participation, not only with the community but also the merchants and restaurants which have embraced this promotion and encouraged their customers to enter the contest. From the time we started this promotion in 2008, we have seen a 281% increase in the number of entries. This year, we also added the name of the business where the applicant entered in order to determine where shoppers and diners went in downtown. The top businesses who encouraged their customers to enter the contest included Eileen Fisher, Sole, Robert Treat Delicatessen, and Ann Taylor.
Located in Westfield, NJ opposite the train station, the NJTTC is committed toward serving this community as a leading sports facility. On Saturday, December 3rd, 2011, 24 Union County Master Gardeners worked side-by-side with the Westfield Y’s Men’s Club Association to unload a delivery of 450 fir trees for the Y’s Men’s 63rd annual Christmas Tree Sale. This is the fifth year (since 2007) in which the Master Gardeners have toted trees on the first Saturday in December at the Y’s Men’s Tree Lot, corner of Elm and Maple Streets in Westfield. The event was hosted by Y’s Man and Co-Yard Boss Bill Rugg (kneeling by sign). MG participation is coordinated annually by Master Gardener T.J. Karns (front row, 4th from left, blue coat, sun glasses), who describes it as “one of our circle of helping hands community service good deeds.” Says Karns, “The Y’s Men give our volunteer group a donation every year, and we respond by helping them unload their trees.”
Hours through December 23rd for the Y’s Men’s Annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale are: Monday through Friday, 3:30 to 9pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 9am to 6pm. “And be sure to check out their Christmas Tree stand,” advises Karns. “It’s the sturdiest and easiest tree stand that we have ever used in our home!"
Boasting the essence of style and design, Jaclyn Civins captured the panache of Worth Ave., in Palm Beach, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, 5th Avenue, Park Avenue, and the exciting Soho in Manhattan. As a curator, The Evalyn Dunn Gallery continues to be a local venue for the exhibition and presentation for the finest 21st Century American and European artists around the world.
Enter the gallery and become totally mesmerized by enormous paintings of magnificent gardens artistically suspended from the ceiling. Bursting in vivid colors of Purple as in Iris, Yellow as in Daffodils, and White as in Snapdragons, you’re completely ensconced in a replica of Monet’s Garden. And while it is easy to imagine a walk down a vivid path leading to a charming cottage painted Yellow, with Kelly Green shutters and a Purple roof, suspended just below this Ron Hedrick work of art, is the Essence of Vancouver--Light! Note the preponderance of sunlight and shadows as they carry you down a path to perhaps a lake, pond, or secret garden.
As featured artists of the Gallery, Ron Hedrick and his daughter Jessica are known for “The Essence of Light,” their fantastic landscapes, and their fine collection of ballet dancers.
“We discovered the Hedrick family while on a tour of Vancouver,” said Civins. “The father-daughter team concentrate on landscapes as well as figurative works of art.”
Divided into specific areas, pass the “Gardens’ and enter the ‘World of Destinations’. From Spain, to Paris, then Venice, and back to Rome, Italy, you’re quickly whisked up to Ben and Jerry’s Vermont, before heading down to Central Park, where you’re privy to blossoms, exotic automobiles, and a special department specifically designed for the selection of frames in all shapes and sizes. And of course, more paintings. This time by Michele Byrne of Pennsylvania who says, “It is my intention to live the rest of my life as an artist. For, I believe art and life are inseparable.”
New to the Evalyn Dunn Gallery is a selection of giftware. A selection of original pastels are signed, dated, and framed for a mere $28. Then charming, mini bud vases, perfect for lavender or teeny buds, are available in assorted colors of burnt orange, red, purple, and tobacco, ($38).
Along with all of the bibelots displayed on the walls and shelves of this 2300 sq. ft. gallery, do remember it’s the place to visit for custom framing. Rest assured a certified framer will do his best to present your work exactly as you’ve always dreamed it would appear on your wall.
But there is even a greater attraction for those that truly admire fine and precious art. Off to a corner, Jacie Civins proudly displays original works by Renoir, Degas, and Whistler. Thus an even greater reason to visit the The Evalyn Dunn Gallery. Savor the pleasure of positive comments, as you chat about all of the gorgeous artwork you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy.

WESTFIELD, NJ - On Wednesday evening, the Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) held an annual holiday open house celebrating the vibrant business community of Westfield. Dominick Verdic, President of the DWC Board of Directors, presented Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of the DWC, with a plaque in honor of her 10 years there. Local business owners enjoyed the chance to chat together, and all enjoyed the food provided by Westfield restaurants.
“This is one of the must-come-to events. Where else can you see all of the other business owners under one roof at one time?” said Jay Tintle, owner, Jay’s Cycle Center, a family-run shop that has been in Westfield for over 50 years. Tintle is proud to be a Westfield mom-and-pop shop owner. “It’s such a great community,” he said.
Despite the pouring rain, “It’s a great turnout,” said Cronin. Motioning to the tables of food, she said, “It’s a lot easier to have a taste-of-the-town when you have so many wonderful restaurants. We appreciate their help putting it all together.”

On Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4th, a joyous crowd gathered for the Grand Celebration of the redesigned and enlarged Evalyn Dunn Gallery on South Avenue in Westfield. Founded by Evalyn and Benjamin Dunn, parents of Proprietor Jaclyn Civins, guests took time to stroll the gallery as they sipped wine and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres.

Opal, a narrative feature film about self-taught naturalist and cult icon Opal Whiteley, makes its New Jersey premiere on November 7th at the Rialto Theater in Westfield, NJ at 7:15PM. The filmmakers will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film.
Inspired by a true story, Opal brings to light the fantastical story of self-taught naturalist Opal Whiteley, a young woman whose diaries ignited 100 years of controversy. Raised in a logging
camp, Opal catapults to fame with the publication of her nature journals in the Atlantic Monthly, then to infamy when readers suspect a hoax. The debate continues today, with some readers
calling Opal a young genius and others a fraud. The film explores the lines between fact and fiction and presents a character who embodies the possibilities of both.
Weaving together period detail with animation and special effects, Opal is a visually lush film from award-winning writer/director Dina Ciraulo and shot by Svetlana Cvetko, cinematographer for this year’s Academy Award winning documentary, Inside Job.
Opal premiered at the 2010 Mill Valley Film Festival, screening alongside Oscar films, The King's Speech and 127 Hours. Opal proved to be a huge hit, selling out three screenings in less
than 24 hours, and prompting programmers to name Opal “the runaway hit of the festival.” Sellout shows continued in Oregon, where Opal had a nine-day theatrical run. Festival screenings
included the San Francisco Women’s International Film Festival, Palm Beach Women’s International Film Festival, Long Island Film Festival and La Femme Festival in Hollywood. Most recently, the filmmakers have signed on with the Tribeca Film Institute to
handle distribution for the film.
Winner of the Robin Eickman Screenwriting Award and the Eric A. Takulan Memorial Fellowship from the Djerassi Resident Artist Program, the film is a tribute to the west coast‘s redwood-studded landscape, environmental spirit, and iconoclastic characters. Whiteley’s growing international fan base has made her the subject of at least nine books, several plays, a BBC radio program, television segments, and a musical. Whiteley’s writing have been translated into Italian, French and German. Opal is the first feature film about her life.
