Salads, Sandwiches, and Parking
By KELLY FEENEY
Finding a good place to eat in downtown Westfield, a dining destination with many restaurants, is easy; scoring a parking spot is trickier. So make a slight detour and head south of the train station to Clyne & Murphy. Chances are you'll nab a curbside parking space.
Clyne & Murphy is primarily a caterer. Since opening in 1984, it has offered an extensive menu of everything from hors d'oeuvres (150 different kinds) and quiches to filet mignon. At lunchtime, the 50-seat dining room with floral tablecloths and pressed-tin ceiling opens to serve a classic, well-priced selection of salads and sandwiches.
To be sure, there are sloppy Joes (although they're tidy here, without too much dressing), various Reuben sandwiches, and Cobb and spinach salads. But there are also pleasant surprises.
For a light lunch, try the pear salad with mixed greens, sprinkled with goat cheese, walnuts and bacon ($8.75). The chunky white meat "crantastic" chicken salad with cranberries, which is on the rotating menu of daily specials, is another good choice ($8.50).
Vegetarians have plenty of options, too. On any given day, there are about 25 salads, including specials like a strawberry spinach salad with fresh berries, toasted coconut, walnuts, goat cheese and sesame dressing ($9.25).
The salmon wrap with sweet mango and honey-lime vinaigrette is refreshing ($9.75), as is the Tokyo turkey wrap with wasabi mayonnaise ($8.75). There are also beef, chicken and fish entree choices (they change daily); take home an entree like pecan-encrusted chicken served with garlicky rice and fresh vegetables for an easy dinner ($9.50 a serving). Save room for a slice of airy strawberry shortcake ($4).
